ISAC Keeps Moving. Temporary Livery
These days we are going through the intake process. The applicants have taken examinations in English, Portugese, General Knowledge, Drawing and then we have had an interview with all of them. Today the board dealing with applications meet in the Ministry of Education and Culture to draw the final list. At the same time the buildings and furniture and infrastructure is being prepared. We went to pick a colour that can unite the campus. We picked an earth colour, reminding the earth here in Africa. In a way we were pressed a bit since the large mobile phone companies have taken blue (Vodacom) and yellow (Mcel) and the insect producer (Raid) uses green. But I am happy with the colour and the idea is that it is temporary until we have run a competition for identity. But we have made some draft images for banners for the opening day and to signify the institute. The picture shows ‘draft’ make note all graphic designers: ‘draft’ of what we might do. We have passed the images around for opinions and Soley will complete one example for printing this weekend.
The idea is to digress a bit from the ‘Art School Modernism’ into more African ambience, introducing some patterns while trying to be clear and hopefully represent the African soil.

ISAC CAMPUS – increased urgency
This is the entrance to the campus.
The buildup for the opening of ISAC is taking a certain crescendo. Things are late as in any proper project like this and surely some things will be done in the last minutes. But we have written the study and workshop program for the first semester, of course based on the longer strategy. We know the date of the speeches and the arrival of the political people, we now know the number of applicants that have applied to study now in the first semester. Today there are examinations for the applicants (see photo) and on Friday the interviews will be taking place. An interesting perspective is that very many of the teachers in the secondary schools, and in the foundation art school here (ENAV) are applying for studying in ISAC. During the recent days there has been a crowd of teachers around the printer in the media-lab there. This is great, meaning that the people in the field are motivated to lift their own competence and gain a university degree. As a matter of fact, only 7% of all those employed by the state here do have a university degree, and that includes all professions. I am sure that very few do have degrees in the creative industries or even the humanities.

We spent some time on campus today to look at plans and how things are faring. We look at how to create an identity for the location and the buildings that are allocated for ISAC in the first round. We agree that there is a very good atmosphere inside the walls of the campus. Karina and me, a partner in crime here for creating the design department, went on Friday to select a ‘unifying’ colour for the campus boundary and to use in the signification of the various buildings that the academy is allocated. The campus has for years been a location for a vocational school. That is great since it means the location already is known as a place of education and there are some workshops that we look forward to using like the woodworking, metal, electric and glass.

This blog will continue to post news as they come and we will inform about the study program that we are working on now, later.

New Arts Academy in Mozambique
Since we blog about our activities people follow what we are up to. I always see the blog as a two sided thing: a) Reporting to others what one is up to; especially for us who do not live close to the largest cluster of friends and co-workers, and so that others can maybe learn something from the work we are doing. b) Documenting ones activities for ourselves so that we can go back and look at what happened and maybe that way help evaluate the successes and failures from the decision taken.

Eiffel and the New Art School, ISAC
The office of Madame Alda Costa, who is the leader of the group that is forming ISAC, the arts academy here in Maputo is in Casa de Ferro (de, do or di, depending on the reference). The building houses some of the offices of the Ministry of Culture and Education. I walk the three minutes from my apartment in the a block designed by the Mozambican architect Pancho Guedes to her office when we are planning and conferring. The Casa de Ferro is a very interesting building designed by Gustave Eiffel and is a kit building in the fashion that Bucky Fuller wanted to develop in his prefab heyday. It was probably shipped here and bolted together (I have not bothered to ask its history). The Google blurb says: “Casa do Ferro was constructed 1892 by the famous French architect Gustave Eiffel. The whole building is made of steel and was dedicated to the Portuguese governor. Due to the subtropical climate in which the building is heated to extreme tempertures nobody had ever lived in it.”
I think it very appropriate that the new Arts and Design Academy is being created in this building, it has a cultural spirit, while also being prefab. It refers to history and is quick build. It is transportable and light but looks like out of heavy stone masonry. There are references to the classics in Europe and the technology that has been developed here in the colonies, of fast production and spontaneous adaption. The building has nothing to do with the African culture here and one wonders how it will be for ISAC and the designers that will be educated here to deal with their own culture in the prominence of global design culture and mass production. The Casa de Ferro is a symbol of such struggle.

ISAC Advertises for Students
The new art and design academy, ISAC, that I work with planning has advertized student places for the first semester starting early September. This first semester is planned to be quite experimental with dialogue meetings of teachers, experts and students to discuss the scope that is potential here in Mozambique. We are going through the basic courses that have to take place and then we plan short intensive workshops about specific areas of design and design methods.
Enclosed is the advertisement that filled a whole page of the newspaper NOTICIAS, addressing every county of the country, laying out the requirements for portfolios and examinations to enter the programs.

ISAC – THE INSTITUTO SUPERIOR DE ARTES CULTURA

Will be launched next month. The first higher education arts and design academy in the country, as I have said often before. Things have been slow and hickuppy and, yes it could be an African thing, but I had the same experience all through the Nineties when we were establishing the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Things are different; access to politicians is different, but decisions have to be taken on a basis of a political system, access to finance and competence in the country. I am very happy that we decided to come here and do our bit, whatever comes out of it. At least I have established a faculty of design and architecture before, so maybe my experience counts for something.
This is where the entrance to ISAC will be next month!
After various meetings, we decided to go to the location of the new school. It is a campus, on the outskirts of Maputo, I do not know all the history behind the location but am understanding that the decision is based on a strategic vision for devolution from the center of Maputo that actually seems to collect all the fundamental activity in Mozambique. An interesting comment I heard last month was: “There is lots of money in Maputo, that is where all the bribes go!”

These images show the campus as it is today, and I must say that I was really impressed with the space and the potential. There are of course many things that are not ready and one does not know what condition the place will be in when the school starts next month, but since I am such an optimist and usually see the potential of things rather than the pitfalls I think the new academy will be great one day.

We are waiting for certain decisions from the Ministry. Some of the curriculum is ready, I have been through the specifications for equipment and furniture for the design department and now we just have to live in hope. I remember the same feeling in Reykjavik, Iceland in the late 90’s. Always wondering when the decision comes from the ministry. Life is maybe not so different from one country to an other.

Next week, we are going to be trough the startup courses/seminars/meetings that are going to be fundamental for the design department (I do not yet know if will be named a faculty or department) in the first semester. The curriculum for design is not very clear yet and that is going to be our task the coming two months. The people that wrote the general plan for ISAC are from the arts. The general plan is ok, but design has its own specific characteristics as we all know and that is what is going to be our task.

The first semester will be a pilot semester and the school proper will start in early February 2010. That means we will have some time to run a dialogue about what design is, how it differs from arts, crafts and business, and to map the knowledge available in Mozambique to teach and run projects. This is really an exciting time ahead and we say that everyone is welcome to come and participate. Just send me a mail and we try to sort something. Of course there is no money here to pay for the participation, but maybe people can apply for development funds in their own institutions or countries to come and participate. We are expecting some people this coming semester, in photography, product design, visual communication and I hope fashion.

School of Crafts in Maputo
We visited the school of traditional crafts here in Maputo last Saturday. It is a small school located behind the Museum of Modern art in Av. Ho Chi Mihn. The students (I saw no female) stay in the school for roughly three months learning specific traditional skills like wood carving, or metalwork or jewlery etc. The school has a small shop where one can buy products made by the students. At least some of the students live on site, probably coming from the wider country since they have dormitories and a communal kitchen in the yard. It was very ispiring to meet some of them (I did not pester them with practical questions about the school) and talk about the materials, where they come from and how they get them to market. Every Saturday morning there is a large crafts market here in Maputo where one can browse and buy. It is interesting that the school is located with the Modern Arts Museum sice that stimulates influences both ways. On Saturday there was a seminar at the back of the Museum. It was a part of a series of meetings of people interested in arts and design, named Z-A Interaction and we met some of them. The visiting organizor Paulo Moreira has been here in Mozambique to visit a school his grandparents were ivolved in establishing in the early 60′s.
The day after we met actually a very nice guy selling his things to tourists on the beach of Macaneta and chatted about how the school is influential in supporting crafts and souvernis industry. It is important to the locals that guests have access to the acutal things produced in the country, also embedded in the local tradition.

LEARNING SHOULD BE FUN
My philosophy is that people learn the most when they enjoy their work and have fun. Then the mind opens up and ideas pass through.
So the most challenging task for the teacher is to make the subject interesting and the learning environment pleasurable. How to get the eyes sparkling with interest and create an understanding of the importance of the task? And when one succeed in that it is fun to be a teacher!
Andri came by with a guitar one day and Rejão, the musician in the class and Gildo played and sang.

Expressing Myself
My better part, Sóley, tells me often off and mostly for things related to philosophizing, theory, design and things about the world in general, rather than her telling me off for practical household issues. She is right in saying that I jump too fast to conclusions, – a very masculine thing to do like when Alexander cut the knot rather than trying to unwind it. She also tells me off for joking too much in my lectures and blogs, saying that people think me ignorant and arrogant, because they do not realize that I am joking rather than posing arguments that I find ridiculous. An example might be that I might admire something cultural since I find it so incredibly stupid and think all people realize that it is so.
Of course I agree with her that I have to be cautious in my expressions, but at the same time I still prefer to be seen as stupid or ignorant rather than not expressing myself. My thoughts go to Platon (not comparing myself though) tragically writing down philosophy that he knew would be used against the fundamental wisdom for the utility of simple folk. Something Socrates never did and died for his opinions.
But the dilemma is the ‘White Sheet of Paper Syndrome’ that we who have been in design education for long know so well. Students so sicerely want to do well that they dare not draw a line on the white sheet. Here in Maputo we, for example, produced sketchbooks for Soley’s students trying to introduce the use of the sketchbook diary as a tool for working (see different blog) and they started to draw on separate sheets before filling in and transferring into the books. I will continue to adhere to the idea that I write and express my opinions. Here are some reasons:
a) to say someting is better than being silent, since it allows others to use it if it might be of use
b) to say something is good for those that disagree with me so they know what I mean and can not make up opinions that I do not have. (During the many years that I have blogged I have only received aggressive comments from anonymous people, probably previous design students or friends trying to be funny).
c) saying something might help people to make up their own opinions, for example that they do not like what I mean.
d) to say nothing is boring and life is to short

Social Engineering and Service Design in Maputo

Evangelican service designers talk like they have invented something new. I really do not care if people think they have invented the wheel again if it works and they are happy. But military planners, society builders, philosophers and architects (sometimes all in one and the same person) have been planning services and social solutions for as long as society has existed. There have been techniques, rules, solutions and problems that we had to learn about while studying architecture. Some successful and unfortunately many bad cases of social problem solving that has resulted in more disaster than was foreseen. My upbringing in architecture and design happened in one such historical moment when we attacked Modernism as the dogma of our forefathers and decided to address context again and named it Post-Modernism.
All this is fine and why do I divulge into my past? Because I am interested in service design as a way of contextualizing design problem solving. To move design away from the formalistic laboratory of the design (school) studio to the ethnographical contextualization of design problems. In that light, service design (can also call it social design) is architectural design, communication design, interaction design etc. The visual communication design students in ENAV here in Maputo have been given the task by Soley to create a tool that will explain to the Maputo citizens how the public transport system works. This has to be explained somewhat further.
Most of public transport here in Maputo is run by very entrepreneurial young men in small vans named Chappas. These are predominately second hand (actually 8th hand) Toyota HiAce vans that would not pass a control test on other continents. The cars, made for maximum 8-9 people transport up to 25 people at the time, each passenger paying a 5 meticas (ca 0,15 dollars) per trip. Since this public service is a private enterprise they race each other to pick up the most number of passengers (trying to overtake each other), and the routes they take are really only known to the driver who most often has installed a super, super active sound system with huge base boxes and the Marabenta Drum and Base runs to cover the noice of the falling apart car. There is also a semi-public driven bus service that is slow and unreliable and needs not be explained here.
Since we came to Maputo I have gone through the experience to take the chappas, sometimes for specific transport and also to gain experience of this public service. There is no way to understand how the system works, one just has to jump aboard, read the name-sticker on the car and hope it passes close to where one is going. Of course not speaking the local language yet does not help. We have also realized that flat maps that we Western people are used to are not common and many friends have difficulty in using them, relying rather on landmarks and mental mapping systems that are more linked to visual and experiencial memory rather than to a Cartesian grid system.
The students are to come with proposals that serve the local public and visitors to the city so that it is possible to understand clearly and use the transport system effectively. There are of course many famous such system in the world, maybe the best known the London Underground Map designed by Harry Beck, actually an engineering draftsman, and the Paris Metro profile including the stations designed by Hector Guimard.
The task for the students I have seen as fourfold primarily.
a) to simplify the everyday (efficiency)
b) to create a collective profile for the whole service and unifying element for the city
c) to divulge information clear and fast
d) to make the mundane more ejoyable
Friday May 15th was the first presentation by the students of the research group work. The research is more complicated than in the normal Western design school since the information is not available through Google, but the students had to do more ethnographical work on their own every day, relating directly in themselves to the current problems and issues that could be addressed. The discussion during the presentations was actually much more about social engineering than graphic design. That was very stimulating and the teachers made some very good comments to the students about such issues. I saw a realization that graphic designers can be fundamental in social engineering and political motivation. This is good for young design students and for the school environment that is mostly arts and crafts orientated and not with proper design entrepreneurial perspective.
So, is the project a service design project? Dealing with logistics and processes? Using people as prototypes for checking social engineering? In my opinion it is although the project is just a simple graphic design school project. It is a project that is fundamental to society here in Africa, while much of graphic design understanding is more geared towards advertizing campaigns and posters for commercial enterprises. More news later when the project unfolds, but we are discussing now how to continue over the next weeks. All suggestions thankfully received.

Dori- your inclusive and contextual concept of “service” design that includes the ethnographic makes sense-but I curious to understand how you and the others view- public/service/social and also “cultural design” – are they all inter-disciplinary and interchangeable terms?
On another note pertaining to your blog- In Bangalore too, we have had privately owned (private entrepreneurs addressing the lack of adequate public transport) vehicles called tempos driven by young men with a helper who hangs at the edge of the open door and pushes passengers in and out and collects the money -Like our public transport bus drivers, these tempos also cause accidents. The latter also stop suddenly to drop and pick up people and don’t stop in the right places, Both drive like crazy and the latter play loud music/videos too- they usually connect the rural/peri-urban with the urban – Given our massive population-The tempos as well as the govt buses transport more numbers than they are meant for.
Reading flat maps is also something these drivers can’t do -if technology were to be introduced-they will need voice activated systems for directions (but wonder if they will hear it over the noise of the loud music/videos)-looking at maps and trying to figure them out would certainly cause more accidents.

Uma, you pinpoint the problem (or the task). Your description of the chappa service is exactly the same as here. The other guy hangs on the sliding door, and if the van is full they hang out of the window.
But about mapping. This is something that I am especially interested in. Why do we impress our flat Cartesian maps onto everything? Me, being an architect know from experience that people generally do not understand geometrical maps/plans. See for example my video of the new proposed premises of the art school in Oslo. I made it as an animation after frustration in meetings where my co-workers did not understand the drawings and kept arguing about things that are not in the pipeline. So, how do we map?
This is a long subject, but my hunch is that there might be a possibility of illustrating landmarks? Mentally map the most important places. The safety instructions in aeroplanes (that I have collected for years) do not include maps. Ikea does not supply maps for furniture, but simple illustrations of how to use and behave.
I have no idea how the information should be communicated, but am excited to see the work of the students in the coming weeks.

I think the bus project is an information design project. The project is similar to service design in that it requires the designer to understand the ‘user journey’ (in this caes litteraly) and create a design that facilitates this journey to be delivered more efficiently, safely and enjoyably. Although the task requires the designers to understand the service provided in terms of a complex system does it require them to/or give them the opportunity to change the service in terms of setting the rules that the drivers adhere (no overtaking at bus stops) to or getting them to keep to timetables, or agreeing set routes and stops etc? It will be interesting to follow what happens next with the project. Its almost as though the current service is somewhere between a bus service and an ‘open’ car sharing scheme. Are the driver-entrepreneurs involved in the project? Does the system work despite the apparent safety concerns of competitive driving and overcrowded vehicles? What do the drivers and users want more of and less of? How will the driver-entrepreneurs benefit from changes to the current system? Do they have a central representation that enables consensus to be negotiated in terms of how the overall system may be re-structured, and this restructuring applied? What are the distances travelled by the buses? Are buses the answer of could it be bikes?
Who sets the briefs for the projects – how are they scoped? Look forward to seeing/reading more.

Regarding maps-they have been critiqued for being instruments of power in the hands of the State, Empire and Capital (Habermas)
John Pickles has an interesting chapter in his book -A history of spaces on Counter mapping where he briefly discusses Habermas and also Brian Harley’s view of maps and their hidden agenda. Harley was opposed to digital cartography and GIS and saw maps as “instruments of power and embedded in social systems of ethnocentricism, privilege and control.”-but perceived paper topographical maps to be more democratic and humanistic forms of geographical knowledge.
Pg. 185: Bill Bunge’s (nomad cartography or insurgent cartography)- community-based maps embedded in the local needs and struggles are interesting -for him science was a tool of progress or “critical modernism” – founder of the Detroit Geographical expedition – where radical geographers worked in ghettos etc in the inner city to support local groups, human rights, environmental and civil rights struggles. Community-based mapping brought geography to the service of the poor and powerless. – repositioned the cartographer vis a vis the poor in the maps which included abundance besides lack, super abundance next to abject poverty etc- Shifted away from urban planner type of maps-mapped children’s safety, raised questions like why were children going hungry in detroit when “overabundant” food in warehouses was rotting, etc.

Thanks for the comments. I must make clear that the group of students are really on Foundation level, since there is not higher education in art and design here. The project is written by Soley with my inputs, and it seems complex for the students while it is also very near at hand for them since it is part of their everyday. The chappa drivers are not included yet but we wonder if it is possible to invite some for review. It has been complex to discuss the map of Maputo, but this morning we turned the angle and decided to concentrate on just separate routes to go further. We did follow the path of one Chappa to find out how it is possible to represent the landmarks on that route. Soley presented a series of images, a video through our car windscreen and I drew a kind of a simple map of the route on its own. Now the students are working on separate routes and it will be interesting to see how it goes. But surely I agree that this project is an information and profiling project, not having resources to do changes to social and infrastructural issues. It is interesting to reflect that two years ago when a master student from my faculty Vanja, spent five weeks here and asked the students to address social issues that they then also selected the chappa phenomenon then concentrating on the safety issues.
Further development will be reported.

Will be more interesting if it goes beyond an information design or simple way finding exercise to the students meandering through the marxist history via the street names as you indicated it might.
Having ridden those tempos from rural to urban areas during my doctoral fieldwork in the mid 90s, the luxury of an “enjoyable” ride is far from the mind of those who are simply happy to get into the tempo and reach their destination.
With regard to including drivers & users in the design team-would be great if possible. Not sure one can get them to follow rules & time tables unless there are some sort of incentives built in or union created for this informal sector. The aim of the drivers & owners of tempos in India is to make the maximum profit and in the fastest time. Driver/helper are given “baata”- a per diem, which is usually a fixed amount. Some may also get a percentage of day’s earnings. If not related to owner, helper & driver often take cuts from the earnings.

VIDEO ART MAPUTO
We went last night to a video-art exhibition/event in Avenue des Artistes. This location is a very nice place here in Maputo, where they stretch canvas over the street in two places, put out furniture and run it as a bar/club. It is to be recommended to anyone visiting the city. We have been there for concerts etc. Last night there was a show of a collection of short films and video art. Soley’s student is one of those showing his work, but the evening represented ca 8 film makers with a variety of shorts. It was interesting to see the subject matter selection and the experiments. The work was not really technical, but documental in form, various clips of people from Mozambique demonstrating their skills or activities. The event was typically artistic in execution, a screen in a small room and we had to crowd somewhat to see something. But of course the most eager got the front seat at the sofa table.
In the break there was a performance art event. I must admit that I do not know the name of the artist, but his activity was interesting, and again not very conceptual but demonstrative.

OFFICE IN MAPUTO
Have settled fairly well in Maputo now and have a flat in the dead center of town, very close to ENAV, the school that Soley works in. This means we walk back and forth all the time for practical things. We work a lot at home, having set up contacts and a table on the balcony so that one of us can sit there and the other at this desk that Alexander and his mates made for us out of the local straw (palha). Soley also has tutorials with the final year students here at home, which makes work easier for her not waiting and some not turning up.
Now, we have got better internet after changing the service provider and our wireless from Oslo works quite well. So, this picture shows our present office, where we work on the macs for our various projects. Anything from social operations through design, bookmaking and to arhitectural projections. The capulana on the white wall is there to give the modernistic white flat some colour, we also painted one wall blue to give us some backdrop, the fan is installed to make life bearable some days.
All in all, this is a fine office space without any comforts of modern office furniture. It might not treat our bodies well, but then we just have to remember to stand up often enough.

The Prime Minister of Iceland in the news in Mozambique

Iceland is not one of the countries in the world that the people here in Maputo know much about. Many say ‘yes I know, Iceland’ but when the discussion goes a bit further they had Ireland in mind or the Netherlands. Even when I was exchanging a cheque in the bank and explained I was from Iceland they kept on registering me as Irish and when I tried to correct they told me that Iceland (in english) was Ireland in Portuguese!
Therefore I was surprised and happy to see a whole page in the newspaper here about my dearly beloved prime Minister in Iceland, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir. The article appeared in the newspaper Verdade in february and I have been on the way to scan it and put here on the site. It is a good day today to do it because the elections are today.
There are many things I am not proud of in Iceland these days but having the first lesbinan priminister makes me very proud. I hope she gets a support today to continue!

The sketchbook is an important tool for the designers. It is where they write/draw/sketch down all the ideas that pop up in the, hopefully, creative mind and where they can collect and store all kind of visual material that is important.
Many of my students here are not adjusted to use a sketchbook and I have found out that sketchbooks are not easy to find here in Maputo. All books have lines for writing. The students use sheets of paper and often do not take good care of them so the sketches are unorganized and get lost.
Therefore I decided to run a short course about the sketchbook and they all got a book for themselves. The books that were bought were drawing blocks that have a very weak glue binding. So me and Dori took one night in making a new cover and binding, both to make the books stronger and more beautiful.
It will take some time to introduce this method of working. Many of the students draw on separate sheets of paper and tell me that they will later repeat the drawing nicely into the book. But the purpose of the book is to have all the ideation and development of their projects in one place!
They have had the book for two weeks now and in two weeks time they are to hand them in for evaluation. I hope I will get books full of creative ideas and sketches.
